Choosing the Right Trailer for Heavy Haulage in Saudi Arabia
The trailer decides whether a machine arrives legally, safely and on time. Choose it by machine weight, height and the road limits, not by price alone.
When a contractor books a machine for a distant Saudi site, the question often shifts from the machine to the trailer. A tracked excavator, a rough-terrain crane or a motor grader may be too tall for a standard flatbed, too heavy for a two-axle truck, or too wide for the lane. This guide describes the trailer families most used for heavy haulage, how they relate to the published Saudi truck limits and how to give a haulier the data it needs. Trailer descriptions are general industry practice, and your haulier's specification always prevails.
Trailer families compared
| Trailer | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Flatbed | Pallets, pipe, steel, smaller machines and containers. | Height of the load on the deck; weight limit per axle. |
| Lowbed (low loader) | Tracked excavators, dozers, graders and rough-terrain cranes. | Loading ramps, ground clearance on site access and total weight. |
| Multi-axle trailer | Heavier machines and components that need load spread over more axles. | Longer, so check length limit and turning space. |
| Modular or self-propelled trailer | Very heavy, oversized items such as vessels, columns and modules. | Specialist planning, route survey, permits and escorts. |
| Dump truck or tipper | Hauling sand, aggregate and spoil on site and between sites. | Axle weights when loaded; covered loads on public roads. |
Relating the trailer to the published limits
The Roads General Authority's published limits are a length of 23 m, a width of 2.6 m and a height of 4.8 m, with gross weights of 21, 34, 42 and 45 tonnes for two, three, four and five axles, and fines of SAR 200 per 100 kg for overweight up to SAR 100,000. A machine on a lowbed has the deck height of the trailer plus its own height, so a tall machine may exceed 4.8 metres even though it looks modest. Always add the trailer height to the machine height when checking.
Data to give your haulier
- Machine make class, operating weight and transport weight, with attachments removed or fitted
- Length, width and height in transport configuration
- Pick-up and delivery addresses, site gate size and ground conditions
- Preferred dates and any client delivery window
- Whether the machine can be loaded by itself or needs a crane or ramps
Heat, tyres and timing
Summer heat is hard on trailer tyres and hydraulics. Ask your haulier about tyre checks and rest stops on long runs, and plan arrival times so that unloading is not caught in the 12:00 to 15:00 outdoor work ban that applies from 15 June to 15 September. Confirm the current year's dates, as published sources have differed on the year.
Worked example: moving a mid-size excavator
Take a tracked excavator of about 20 tonnes with a cab height near 3 metres. On a lowbed with a deck height of roughly one metre, the loaded height approaches 4 metres, inside the published 4.8 metre limit. The combined weight of excavator, trailer and tractor must still fit the axle-group limit, so a multi-axle lowbed is usual. Change the machine to a larger 40 tonne class and both height and weight margins shrink, which is when transport planning needs extra attention. These figures are illustrative, so use the haulier's actual specification.
Securing the load
Whatever the trailer, the load must be chained or strapped at the machine's designated tie-down points, with the bucket or attachment lowered and locked. Check chains after the first few kilometres, because loads settle. In hot weather, check tyres and brakes at each stop.
When you compare haulage quotes, ask each haulier to state the trailer type and axle count in the quote. Two quotes with the same price can describe very different set-ups, and the cheaper one may leave you without margin on weight or height.
Which trailer carries a 20 tonne excavator?
Usually a lowbed with enough axles to stay within the weight limit once trailer and tractor are added. The haulier confirms the exact configuration.
Do you arrange the trailer for rented machines?
Yes. Transport is quoted per request and included in the mobilisation and demobilisation line.
