Crawler Crane vs All-Terrain Crane for Heavy Lifts in Saudi Arabia
For refinery columns, reactors and plant vessels, the crawler crane vs all-terrain crane decision shapes cost, schedule and ground works.
Heavy lifts in Saudi Arabia usually mean a refinery, gas plant or petrochemical shutdown where a column, heat exchanger or reactor must be set in a tight window. Two crane families compete for these lifts: crawler cranes and large all-terrain cranes. Neither is always better. This guide compares them on the factors that matter in the Eastern Province and other Saudi industrial areas.
A crawler crane carries more on soft ground. An all-terrain crane arrives and starts sooner. The lift study decides.
The core differences
| Factor | Crawler crane | All-terrain crane |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity range | From about 50 tonnes to over 3,000 tonnes in the largest classes. | Mobile classes range from about 25 to over 1,200 tonnes. |
| Ground loading | Spreads load over tracks, but heavy lifts still need a compacted, matted platform. | Loads concentrate at outriggers, so outrigger mats and ground bearing checks are critical. |
| Mobilisation | Delivered in many loads and assembled on site; needs space and assembly time. | Drives to site and sets up faster, but large units still need counterweight and boom loads. |
| Moving on site | Can travel with a load in some configurations, on prepared ground. | Travels on site roads and moves between lift points without a trailer. |
| Best for | Reactors, columns and the heaviest long-duration lifts. | Multiple medium-heavy lifts across a site and short-duration campaigns. |
What Saudi sites add to the decision
- Space. Shutdown areas around refinery units are tight. A crawler crane needs room to assemble, so confirm the footprint early. One published Aramco refinery upgrade in Riyadh completed 109 lifts, including eight hydrocracker reactors of 450 tonnes each, in a 40-day window, because lifting studies and route surveys started well before the shutdown.
- Ground. Eastern Province coastal sites may include sabkha. Whatever crane you choose, the engineer must confirm ground bearing for the working platform.
- Documents. A supplier in Jubail notes that Aramco sites require SAEP-318 compliance and SABIC sites require SABIC HSE standards, with a stamped lift plan, third-party inspection and operator competency records. Treat this as supplier information and confirm with your client.
- Lead time. The same supplier suggests allowing 5 to 7 weeks in Jubail for registration and permitting. Start document work as soon as the lift is likely.
A simple way to decide
Ask your lift engineer for the heaviest pick, its radius and the ground bearing available. If the load chart of a large all-terrain crane covers the pick with margin and you have outrigger space, it will usually mobilise faster and cost less in set-up. If the pick sits near the limit of a mobile class, the ground is soft, or the lift repeats over weeks, a crawler crane is usually the safer plan. Either way, the lift plan decides, not the brochure.
Questions to ask your lift engineer
- What is the heaviest pick, including rigging, and at what radius?
- What ground bearing is available at the crane position, and who has confirmed it?
- How much space is there to assemble and travel, and what overhead or underground services are nearby?
- How many days will the crane stay, and are the lifts repeated or one-off?
- Which documents does the client require before the crane enters the site?
Mobilisation time matters
A crawler crane often arrives in several loads and needs assembly, while an all-terrain crane can travel and set up quickly. If your lift is short, the faster set-up of an all-terrain machine may outweigh the capacity of a crawler. For a long campaign on soft ground, the crawler's stability often wins.

What is a critical lift?
A critical lift is one where failure could cause serious harm or loss, usually because of load weight, radius, hazardous area or nearby live equipment. It needs a detailed plan and approvals. See our guide to critical lift planning.
