How Dewatering Works on Construction Sites in Saudi Arabia
Construction dewatering Saudi Arabia projects need keeps excavations dry and stable. It starts with knowing how high the water is and how fast it flows back.
A trench or foundation pit that fills with water stops work, softens the ground and can destabilise the sides. Dewatering is the set of methods that remove or control groundwater so the excavation stays dry. In Saudi Arabia it matters most near the coast, where groundwater is shallow, and in cities and plants where trenches cut through wet ground. This guide explains how dewatering works, which methods are used, and how to brief a rental company for pumps.
Why groundwater is a Saudi coastal issue
Coastal Eastern Province ground often includes sabkha, which is described as saline flats underlain by sand, silt or clay. One published coastal gas plant case study found about 4 metres of sand over roughly 12 metres of weak sabkha, with groundwater around 2.7 metres below ground, and warned of high collapse potential when salts dissolve with water. When the water table is higher than the excavation depth, dewatering is not optional, and the water you pump may be salty and aggressive to equipment.
The main dewatering methods
| Method | How it works | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Sump and pump | Water drains to a low point in the excavation and a pump removes it. | Shallow trenches and pits with modest inflow. |
| Wellpoints | Wellpoint pumps and piping lower the groundwater level around the excavation. | Pipeline trenches and larger excavations where the water table is above the dig depth. |
| Deep wells | Submersible pumps in drilled wells lower water over a wider area. | Large, deep foundations and plant excavations. |
The right method depends on soil permeability, water levels, pumping distance and any contaminant removal needs. Pumped water often needs treatment before discharge to land, surface water or stormwater inlets. We have not found a single published national rule for construction discharge, so confirm the approved discharge route with your client and the relevant authority before you start.
Pump types used for dewatering
- Submersible pumps, from compact portable units for small jobs to larger units for corrosive or abrasive conditions.
- Self-priming, solids-handling surface pumps powered by diesel, electricity or gas for high-volume, high-head work.
- Hydraulic submersible pumps for general dewatering, bypass, drainage and sludge duty.
What to tell your rental company
- Excavation depth, length and width, and expected groundwater level
- Soil type and whether water is salty, sandy or contains solids
- Pumping distance and height to the discharge point
- Power available: electric supply, generator or diesel pump
- Duration, working hours and who will monitor the pumps
Plan for standby and power
Pumps that stop overnight can flood a trench by morning. For critical excavations, ask for a standby pump, level controls where suitable and a power plan, such as a generator sized for pump starting current. Use the generator guide on this site to size it.
A typical sequence on a pipeline trench
On a pipeline or utility trench in wet ground, the sequence usually runs: confirm the groundwater level, install the dewatering system ahead of the excavator, lower the water below the planned trench bottom, excavate, lay and test the pipe, backfill and compact, then switch the system off in stages. Starting the excavator before the water is down is the most common cause of a collapsing trench and a stalled crew. Keep records of pumping hours and levels, because your client may ask for them.
Keep a record of pumping
Log the pump start time, fuel or power use and any changes in water level each day. A simple record helps you see whether the pump is keeping up and supports any discussion about rental duration.
How deep can dewatering lower the water?
It depends on the method, soil and pump. Surface pumps have practical suction limits, while wellpoint systems and deep wells are used for deeper drawdown. Your engineer designs the system.
Do you rent pumps for emergency flooding?
Yes, subject to availability. Send the location, expected volume and discharge point and we confirm what we can mobilise.
