Types of Cranes Used in Saudi Industrial Projects
There is no single best crane. The types of cranes in Saudi Arabia each suit a different job, ground and budget, and choosing wrongly costs days.
If you search for crane rental in Saudi Arabia, you will find dozens of crane names and capacity numbers. This guide cuts through them. It explains the six crane types most used on Saudi construction, refinery, pipeline and plant sites, what each does well, and how to match a type to your job. It is written for project managers, procurement teams and site engineers who need to brief a rental company properly.
Refinery and plant lifts are decided by space and ground. Building lifts are decided by height and reach.
The six main crane types
| Crane type | Strength | Typical Saudi use |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile (truck-mounted) crane | Fast to set up, road-going, wide range of sizes. | Steel erection, plant equipment lifts, loading trucks. |
| Rough-terrain crane | Works on unpaved ground inside a site. | Material yards, desert sites, plant shutdown areas. |
| All-terrain crane | Road travel plus off-road ability, large capacity. | Large lifts at several locations in one project. |
| Crawler crane | Highest capacity and stable on soft ground when matted. | Reactors, columns and the heaviest refinery lifts. |
| Tower crane | Great height and reach from a fixed base. | High-rise and large building projects in cities. |
| Pick-and-carry crane | Compact and can move with the load. | Confined plant areas, workshops, pipe and equipment moves. |
How big are they? Typical capacity ranges
According to MYCRANE's selection guide, mobile cranes range from about 25 tonnes to over 1,200 tonnes, crawler cranes from about 50 tonnes to over 3,000 tonnes, and tower cranes typically lift 4 to 32 tonnes at the tip with jibs of 80 metres or more. Capacity on its own is not the answer, because rated capacity falls quickly as the load moves away from the crane. We cover how to read this in our guide to crane load charts and capacities.
Choosing a crane for Saudi refinery and plant work
Industrial cities such as Jubail concentrate refining, petrochemical and utilities work, and demand there is driven by maintenance shutdowns, expansions and new construction. A crane supplier operating in Jubail notes that crawler cranes in the 200 tonne class are used for column and reactor placement, vessel setting, structural steel and turnaround lifts. For Aramco-contracted work, cranes typically need a valid SASO Certificate of Conformity, a periodic inspection certificate from an accredited body, and compliance with the relevant ASME B30 standard, for example B30.5 for mobile cranes.
Quick selection guide
| Situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| Heavy vessel in a refinery shutdown | Crawler or large all-terrain crane, with a lift study. |
| Pipe and steel in a plant yard | Rough-terrain or mobile crane. |
| Tight workshop or plant lane | Pick-and-carry crane. |
| Multi-storey building | Tower crane, with mobile cranes for erection. |
What affects the choice in Saudi conditions
- Ground. Sabkha and soft sand reduce what outriggers can safely carry, so ground bearing must be checked before the crane arrives.
- Heat and wind. Summer heat, shamal winds and the midday work ban from 15 June to 15 September all affect lift scheduling.
- Documents. Client requirements for inspection, operator competence and lift plans can decide which crane is accepted at the gate.
Which crane at which stage of a Saudi project
On a typical industrial project the crane spread changes with the programme. Early works use rough-terrain or small mobile cranes for material yards and pre-assembly. Structural erection brings in mobile cranes and, in cities, tower cranes. Plant installation and shutdowns bring the large all-terrain and crawler cranes for the heaviest picks, and commissioning returns to smaller cranes and pick-and-carry machines for equipment moves. Booking each class only for the stage that needs it is the main way contractors control crane cost, which is why rental suits this work better than ownership.
What is the most common crane for rent in Saudi Arabia?
Mobile and rough-terrain cranes from about 25 tonnes to 250 tonnes are the most commonly requested for plant, pipeline and building work. Crawler cranes are used where lifts are heaviest or ground is soft.
Do I need a different crane for Aramco work?
Not necessarily a different model, but the crane must carry the right paperwork: SASO conformity, accredited inspection and ASME B30 compliance, plus competent operators approved by the client.
How do I get a crane quote?
Send the load weight, rigging weight, pick and set-down radius, lift height, ground type, site and start date. We confirm availability and transport in the quote.
