Low-Bed Trailer Types and Selection Guide
Compare low-bed trailer types for heavy transport and rig moves in Saudi Arabia and learn how to choose the right one.

Quick answer: use a flatbed for loads up to about 2.6 m high, a semi low-bed (step-deck) for taller loads, a low-bed for heavy machines and plant, an extendable trailer for long items, and hydraulic modular trailers or SPMTs for very heavy or tall modules.
Trailer types compared
| Trailer | Typical use | Main advantage | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flatbed | Containers, porta cabins, steel, pipe | Simple, widely available | Highest deck, so tall loads may exceed height limits |
| Semi low-bed (step-deck) | Taller cabins, skids, small plant | Lower rear deck gains height | Shorter usable lower deck |
| Low-bed (fixed gooseneck) | Excavators, dozers, cranes, rig components | Low deck, high capacity | Loading by ramps only |
| Detachable gooseneck (RGN) | Tracked machines, heavy plant | Front loading, no long ramps | Needs trained crew to detach and connect |
| Extendable trailer | Long pipe spools, piles, beams | Deck length adjusts to the load | Rear overhang and turning radius |
| Hydraulic modular trailer / SPMT | Heavy modules, vessels, transformers | Axle lines added to spread weight, hydraulic levelling | Route survey and engineering required |
How to choose
- Start with weight and centre of gravity. The trailer rating, axle loads and the prime mover all have to suit the load.
- Check the loaded height. Deck height plus load height decides whether you clear bridges, power lines and plant pipe racks.
- Check width and length. Oversize loads need permits and escorts. Check current requirements with the Transport General Authority and traffic police before you commit to dates.
- Plan the route. Survey turns, soft shoulders, desert tracks and site gates. On rig moves the last kilometres on sand are often the hardest part.
- Plan loading and securing. Decide whether the load drives on, is lifted on by crane, or is jacked and skidded. Lashing points, chains and binders must be rated for the load.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a low-bed and a flatbed?
A low-bed has a much lower deck, so it can carry taller and heavier machines within height limits. A flatbed is higher and suits containers, cabins and steel.
When do I need a hydraulic modular trailer?
When the load is too heavy for a conventional low-bed axle group, or when you need hydraulic levelling and more axle lines to spread the weight on the road.
Do oversize loads need permits in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Loads over the legal width, height, length or weight need permits and often escorts. Check current requirements with the authorities before booking dates.
What details does Ariane need to quote heavy transport?
Weight, dimensions, centre of gravity, pick-up and delivery points, loading method and required dates.
Need a second check? Send the load, site and equipment details to the Ariane Ventures team through the contact page and we will review the selection with you.
This guide is for awareness and early planning. Final values must come from the manufacturer’s data, a site soil report and a lift plan approved by a competent person.
