All-Terrain Crane vs Mobile Crane in Saudi Arabia

The all-terrain crane vs mobile crane question comes up on almost every Saudi project. The right answer depends on how many sites you lift at, the ground between them and the size of the picks.

Contractors often use the terms loosely, so it helps to define them. In this guide, a mobile crane means a truck-mounted or telescopic crane on a standard carrier that travels on roads and works from outriggers. An all-terrain crane is a multi-axle, all-wheel-steer machine that combines road travel with the ability to drive across rough ground on site. A rough-terrain crane is a compact single-cab machine built for unpaved ground inside a site. The differences below are general engineering practice; exact specifications vary by model and are confirmed in the quote.

Side-by-side comparison

Travel between sitesTravels on roads; may need a low-bed for long moves or heavy configurations.Drives on roads and across site ground, so fewer trailer moves between work areas.
Ground inside the siteNeeds firm, level ground for travel and set-up.Handles soft or uneven ground better, but outrigger ground bearing still decides the lift.
Set-up timeQuick for light and medium lifts.Quick on repeat moves; large units need counterweight and boom assembly planning.

When a mobile crane is the better choice

Choose a mobile crane when the lifts happen at one location, the ground is firm and the capacity you need sits in the 25 to 250 tonne range. This covers most steel erection, pipe-rack work, equipment placement and truck loading on Saudi plant and building sites. Lower rental rates and simpler logistics usually make mobile cranes the economic choice for single-site work.

When an all-terrain crane earns its cost

An all-terrain crane suits projects where the crane works at several points across a large area, such as a pipeline spread, a refinery or a wide industrial site, because it can move between lifts without being loaded on a trailer each time. It is also useful where site roads are rough or sandy. A crane supplier operating in Jubail lists all-terrain and crawler classes for column placement, vessel setting and turnaround lifts, which are typical of the heavier plant work in the Eastern Province.

Where a rough-terrain crane fits

Rough-terrain cranes sit between the two. They are compact, work well in material yards, desert laydown areas and plant shutdown zones, and can be moved around the site without a trailer. They are usually moved between sites on a low-bed. For many Saudi contractors they are the practical middle option, with capacities typically in the 25 to 80 tonne class.

Decision checklist

  • How many lift locations are there, and how far apart?
  • What is the ground like between locations: paved, packed sand, sabkha?
  • What is the heaviest pick, and at what radius?
  • Does the client require specific documents or operator approvals?
  • What is the schedule: one lift, a shutdown week or a long campaign?
Final selection is confirmed with your lift planner. Send us the details and we will recommend a class.

Think in total project cost

The daily rate is only one line in the cost of a lift. Count the trailer moves between lift points, the days spent on set-up and assembly, the crew waiting, the ground preparation and the risk of a missed shutdown window. A crane that costs more per day but removes two trailer moves and a day of set-up can be cheaper overall on a spread-out site. For a single lift in one place, the reverse is usually true. Ask your rental company to quote both options when the answer is not obvious.

Is an all-terrain crane more expensive to rent?

Usually yes for the same capacity, but it can save time and trailer moves on multi-location work. Compare total project cost, not only the daily rate.

Can a mobile crane work on sabkha or soft sand?

Only with checked ground bearing and proper outrigger mats or a prepared platform. Ground bearing, not the crane type, decides the lift.
