Choosing the Right Pump for Construction Dewatering in Saudi Arabia
The right pump for construction dewatering is chosen by flow, head, water quality and power, not by horsepower alone.
Contractors often ask for a pump by pipe size or horsepower. Pump suppliers size pumps differently: by the flow the pump must deliver and the total head it must overcome. If you can give the flow and the head, plus a few facts about the water and the site, a rental company can propose the right pump the first time. This guide sets out the five questions that decide the choice for construction dewatering in Saudi Arabia, from a pipeline trench in the Eastern Province to a foundation in Jeddah.
Question 1: how much water, and how fast?
Flow is the volume the pump must move per hour or per second. Estimate inflow from the excavation size, soil and groundwater level, then add margin for rain or flushing. An engineer or the dewatering designer normally provides the figure. If you do not have it, tell us the excavation dimensions and the depth of water and we suggest a starting size, to be refined once pumping begins.
Question 2: how high and how far?
Total head is the vertical lift from the water to the discharge point, plus friction in the hose or pipe over the distance. A long run or a rise to a tank or stormwater inlet raises the head and cuts the flow. Always state both the height and the length of the discharge line. A pump that looks ideal at the supplier's headline flow may deliver much less at your head.
Question 3: what is in the water?
| Water type | Pump features to ask for |
|---|---|
| Clean groundwater | Standard submersible or surface pump. |
| Sandy or muddy water | Solids-handling, abrasion-resistant models. |
| Salty or corrosive water (sabkha) | Models rated for corrosive duty, and flushing after use. |
| Water with sludge | Hydraulic submersible or sludge-duty pumps. |
Question 4: what power do you have?
City and plant sites often have electric supply for submersibles. Remote corridors, desert laydown yards and new sites rarely do, so diesel pumps or generators are needed. When you use electric pumps on a generator, size it for the pump starting current, not just the running load. Our generator guide shows how, and our generator and light tower rental page lists the available classes.
Question 5: what if the pump stops?
Decide the cost of a flooded trench before you decide the cost of a spare pump. For critical or deep excavations, hire a standby unit, ask about level controls and arrange attendance for refuelling and checks. In summer, plan shifts around the 12:00 to 15:00 outdoor work ban from 15 June to 15 September, and make sure automatic pumps keep running when crews are off site.
Request checklist
- Required flow and total head, or excavation size and water depth
- Length and height of the discharge line and the discharge point
- Water quality: clean, sandy, salty or sludge
- Available power and fuel arrangement
- Duration, hours and standby needs
- Discharge approval from your client or authority
Common pump sizing mistakes
- Ordering by hose diameter, which says little about flow or head.
- Forgetting friction on long discharge lines, so the pump delivers far less than its headline flow.
- Using a clean-water pump on sandy or salty water and wearing it out in days.
- Running a generator sized for the pump's running power, not its starting current.
- Having no standby unit and no plan for overnight attendance.
Plan for the discharge point
Before the pump arrives, decide where the water will go. Discharge hose length, height and any permission to discharge affect the pump size you need. Ask the site team to confirm the discharge route in writing, so the pump is not shut down on day one.
Do you supply hoses and fittings?
Yes, hoses and fittings can be included in the quote. Give us the discharge line length so we send the right amount.
Can you deliver pumps to Jeddah or Riyadh?
Yes, delivered from Dammam on request. Transport and timing are confirmed in the quote.
