How to Transport Heavy Equipment Between Saudi Sites
Transport can be a bigger line in the quote than the machine itself on a long-distance job, and it has hard limits.
Saudi Arabia is large, and sites are often hundreds of kilometres from the nearest yard. Moving an excavator, crane or dump truck there is a project in itself: the right trailer, the right route, the right driver and the right documents. This guide sets out the published truck dimension and weight limits, the fines for breaking them, the approximate distances from our Dammam base and a checklist to plan the move. It does not replace advice from a qualified haulier or the authorities.
The published limits
In September 2024 the Roads General Authority (RGA) clarified truck limits in the Saudi Highway Code: maximum length 23 m, width 2.6 m and height 4.8 m, with a SAR 1,000 penalty for exceeding the dimensions.

Overweight loads are fined SAR 200 per 100 kg over the limit, up to a maximum of SAR 100,000. Weight includes the trailer, the machine and any attachments loaded with it.

What this means when you hire
- Heavy machines such as large excavators or cranes can exceed standard dimensions or weights once loaded on a trailer. Those moves need special arrangements with a qualified haulier.
- The RGA article we reviewed does not describe the oversize permit process, so confirm permits and escort rules with your haulier and the authorities before booking.
- Choose the right-sized machine for the job. A larger machine can add transport cost and permit steps.
- Cranes in transit must have the swing brake and turntable locking pin engaged, and booms and counterweights may travel separately.

Cost drivers in a transport quote
A transport quote depends on distance, trailer type, machine weight and whether the load stays within the published limits. Extra costs appear for waiting time at site gates, escorts where required, and return trips for the trailer. Ask whether the quote is one-way or round trip, and whether unloading equipment is included. For short moves inside the Eastern Province corridor, transport may be a small part of the total, while for a move to Jeddah it can become a major line.
Loading and unloading at site
Many delays happen at the site end. Check that the access road can carry a loaded trailer, that the gate is wide enough and that there is a flat, firm area for unloading. If the machine cannot drive off the trailer, arrange a crane. Tell the haulier the site contact name and the delivery window so the driver is not stuck waiting at the gate.
Book transport early for peak periods, such as the weeks before a major shutdown, when hauliers and trailers are in demand. Confirm the loading time, the unloading time and who will receive the machine at the site gate, and keep the driver's phone number with your site team.
Finally, share the published limits with your site team so that nobody orders an attachment or accessory that pushes the load beyond the legal envelope at the last minute.
